Our vision: Knowing Jesus and introducing Him to others

About Bay Christian Church
Our history PDF Print E-mail

Bay Christian Church began meeting in July 2005 in response to a desire by a small group of people who prayed for an opportunity to reach people in Blackmans Bay and surrounding communities with the good news of Jesus Christ.

The people of Bay Christian Church are a family of ordinary people from all walks of life who believe that Jesus Christ is Saviour and Lord. We love to meet together and get to know new people.

Bay Christian Church is a church plant of the Christian Reformed Church of Kingston. The Christian Reformed Churches of Australia were established in the early 1950's, with the first church being established in Penguin, Tasmania. Christian Reformed believers trace their spiritual roots to the Protestant Reformation. The Reformation represented a call to people everywhere to return to the Bible's teaching as follows:
  • · Scripture alone is the final authority by which we are to live (2 Tim 3:14-17)
  • · Christ alone is the one true Saviour of the world (Acts 4:10-12)
  • · Salvation is a gift of grace alone and is not earned (Ephesians 2:8)
  • · We are saved by faith alone and not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9)
  • · Our salvation and all we do in response is for the glory of God alone (Romans 11:36; 1 Corinthians 10:31)

Christian Reformed believers also see themselves to be in spiritual continuity with God's people from the time of the early church in the Bible.

Bay Christian Church is also part of a wider movement called Vision 100. This movement is not restricted to a particular denomination but includes churches from various backgrounds. The vision is to see 10% of people in Southern Tasmania reached for Christ by planting 100 Bible-believing, gospel-focused churches.

Knowing Jesus and introducing Him to others

Christianity is all about Jesus.

We strive to grow in our knowledge of Jesus as:
  • · God come down from heaven (Mark 14:61-64; John 10:33-33; John 14:8-9; John 6:38,41-42).
  • · Without sin (John 8:46) and able to forgive the sins of others (Mark 2:5).
  • · The only way to heaven (John 14:6).
  • · Lord over all as seen in his miracles – healing the sick, restoring sight to the blind, enabling the lame to walk, calming the forces of nature with a word, raising the dead (Mark 2:34, Mark 10:52, Mark 2:1-12; Mark 4:39, Mark 5:41-42).
  • · Crucified and risen from the dead for our salvation (Mark 15-16).
  • · Deserving of worship as God (Matthew 14:33; John 9:38).
We seek to introduce Jesus to others:
  • · Jesus calls people everywhere to repent and believe in him for their eternal salvation (Mark 1:15; John 5:35-37; John 10:35).
  • · Jesus calls his followers to continue his mission of making disciples of the nations being his witnesses throughout the world (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8-9).

Our values PDF Print E-mail
Bay Christian Church is a family of believers committed to working together and sharing life together with the following aspirations:

1. A gospel-hearted community

The good news of Jesus Christ is at the very heart if our community. It not only saves us and brings us into relationship with God and other Christians, but informs every aspect of our community and individual lives. It calls us to care for one another, share the gospel with unbelievers, and live a sacrificial, servant-hearted, generous and risk-taking lives for Christ.

2. A missionary community

We are committed to telling others the good news about Jesus in the context of gospel community. As we build relationships with people and share the gospel message we also introduce them to Christian community. We are committed to welcoming broken people and making the church accessible to unbelievers because all people are precious in God's sight. We are committed to planting new churches as the opportunity affords itself.

3. A family of families

We are committed to strengthening the family life of every family in the church, recognizing that when the family unit is strong, so the church (family if families) will be strong. We are also committed to sharing our lives in Christian community, caring for one another, discipling one another, and serving one another. We want people who call themselves followers of Christ to live out their identity of being the church, instead of merely attending the church

4. A praying community

We recognize that God is the agent on mission and is the 'builder' of his church. We acknowledge our dependence on him for the forward movement of the gospel through the church and in people's lives. We therefore commit ourselves to constantly calling upon him to pour out his Spirit on the church.

5. A Bible shaped community

We want our lives and life together to be formed and shaped by the Bible's story of redemption. We believe the Bible to be the reliable authoritative and sufficient Word of God, and therefore submit ourselves to it. We believe the preaching if the Word is God's primary means of grace to grow us spiritually. We are committed to learning, studying and putting into practice what we read in the Scriptures believing it contains all we need for life and godly living.

6. A community working for renewal of society

As we recognize no sacred secular divide, we are committed to serving our society in areas of need. While we understand that our society's greatest need is gospel renewal, we will encourage one another to glorify God and serve others through the workplace, business, community projects, etc believing that all activities no matter how mundane may be done to the glory of God .

7. A worshipping community

We love to meet together in corporate worship, realizing that it most closely reflects the future that God's calls us into. Our Worship Services are designed for believers to worship God. We are not a "seeker service" in that we do not place our highest priority for gathering on winning seekers, but rather on equipping believers and enabling them to worship as a corporate community. However, the seeker is very important to us and thus every attempt is made to use our worship as an opportunity for the seeker to meet God. We believe biblical worship is an excellent way to expose the seeker to God's Word and God's people.
